Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What’s laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal with GentleMax Pro is a fast, comfortable way to permanently remove unwanted hair from your face and body. GentleMax Pro features dual energy settings — Alexandrite and Nd:YAG — that safely and effectively treat all skin types and complexions. No matter how light or dark your skin, the GentleMax Pro has a setting for you. With GentleMax Pro, Laser Lisse can remove hair from almost any area on your body or your face.

How do lasers remove hair?

GentleMax Pro emits powerful pulses of laser energy that targets the pigment in your hair follicles. The energy destroys the hair shaft at the root and damages the cells in follicles that promote hair growth.

Laser hair removal is most effective when your hair is at the earliest stage of growth, known as the anagen stage. At any point in time, only a fraction of your hairs is in that anagen phase. You will need several treatments spaced out over time to catch each hair in its anagen stage.

After laser treatment, your hair falls out. The damaged follicle can’t produce new hair. Dr. Kathleen Farrell and her team of expert aestheticians (RNs and Nurse Practitioners) at Laser Lisse in Gaithersburg, Maryland, remove unwanted hair in a few as an average of five treatments (with a four to eight week waiting period in between).

How long does a laser hair-removal treatment take?

Each hair-removal session with GentleMax Pro lasts between a few minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. Your hair takes about two to three weeks to fall out after the treatment.

GentleMax Pro is one of the fastest lasers on the market. You may need a touch-up in a year, in several years, or never.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

The GentleMax Pro features a Dynamic Cooling Device™ cryogen spray to keep your skin at a comfortable temperature throughout your procedure. The treatment is very tolerable, and numbing cream is not needed.

Is laser hair removal expensive?

When you factor in the cost of time and money spent on shaving, plucking, waxing, and other hair-removal options, lasers are extremely cost-effective. Researchers estimate that the average woman shaves away more than 72 of her days over a lifetime and spends $10,000 on razors and other shaving supplies.  If you are accustomed to regular waxing, laser hair removal will pay for itself in less than two years.

Are there other benefits to laser hair removal?

Some patients feel that the skin in the areas where they received treatment now feels smoother and firmer.  Others are happy to say that the dark shadow where the hair was is now light and the skin is soft. Studies have also shown a significant decrease in sweating in the underarms post laser hair removal. The laser energy decreases the effectiveness of the eccrine (sweat) glands, especially the ones located near the base of the hair follicles.

Can men get laser hair reduction?

More men than ever are lining up for laser hair removal to treat areas such as:

  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Stomach
  • Ears
  • Beard bumps
